Bright + Sunny Stock Photos

Hello! After a month long blogging brain break (and a crazy amount of new clients and design work!) I’m back with a post I’ve been thinking about for a while. I love finding stock images that don’t look like stock images. Well curated, highly stylized and excellently designed photos are all things that catch my eye + separate the “wow” photos from the pack. I went through one of my favorite sites, Stocksy, and gathered a round up of some bright + sunny images that I love + can’t believe are stock images. (For all the people stuck in cold climates, hopefully these pics hold you until summer!)

Finding Fresh Valentine’s Day Visuals

Check out what iStock (a leading stock photography site) has discovered about the trends + fresh Valentine’s Day visuals. To see more photography trends, check out their site.

Hearts. Flowers. Chocolates. Happy, young couples holding hands and splashing through puddles of rain together. You know the drill. The lead-up to February 14th trots out the same visual clichés to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Although the media is saturated with traditional iconography surrounding the holiday, people’s attitudes towards Valentine’s Day are changing and there is a growing shift in the status quo of imagery used to represent love.

From a creative perspective, art often imitates life. And in life, love takes many forms. Love isn’t relegated solely to the pink and red hues associated with Valentine’s Day. There are many more shades in the color palette of love. From the unconditional love a parent has for their child, the platonic feelings a person has for their best friend, to decades of romance shared between an older couple, there are a number of ways love can be visualized.

While classic Valentine’s imagery is no less iconic, consider departing from tradition this Valentine’s Day and tap into visuals that express a more modern, more inclusive sentiment. Here are a few Valentine’s Day image ideas to serve as inspiration.

A Refreshing Take on Love In Bloom Valentine's Day
[Image]
A young couple surrounded by wildflowers and truly enjoying each other’s company trumps store bought blooms and sitting across from one another at a table. Opt for a fresh take on romance that focuses on joyful, relaxed expressions of affection instead of imagery that feels staged.

Love Ages Well

Young lovers eventually grow old. Although the body ages, a true and eternal bond lasts. Images that show an older couple still deeply in love are equally as sweet and poignant as those depicting younger couples – and offer a refreshing, unexpected look at love.

Embracing Same Sex Couples
Valentine's Day
[Image]
In the U.S. alone, the Census Bureau estimates 168,000 same sex married couples and 646,464 same-sex households. That number does not even account the number of LGBT individuals on the dating scene in the United States, let alone the world. Despite these numbers, there is a sore lack of Valentine’s images depicting same sex couples. Photographs of loving partners of the same sex show that love knows no gender lines.

Romance, Schmoemance: A Focus on Friendship — including Four-Legged Friends

Valentine's DAY
[Image]

Who says that Valentine’s Day is just for lovers? Many people are now including friends in the celebration of love. While Singles Awareness Day on February 15th (aka – Half-Priced Candy Day) hints at an air of cynicism towards Valentine’s Day by those without a partner, many singles choose to celebrate the day by pampering themselves or by letting their friends know how much they mean to them.

While friends of the two-legged variety are becoming an important part of the new Valentine’s Day landscape, let’s not forget about our four-legged friends, either. In 2013, of the $18.6 billion Americans spent on Valentine’s Day, $815 million was spent on pets. From adorable kitty sweaters in sweet shades of pink and crimson, to heart-shaped boxes of doggie treats, pets are now part of the new Valentine’s Day equation.
Valentine's Day

Photos depicting an unbreakable bond between gal pals or a rock steady bromance showcase that Valentine’s Day has meaning for best friends, too.

Love takes many forms, but is best expressed honestly, openly, and (when it comes to creative imagery) as realistically as possible.

Interior Inspiration

Studio Oink
Studio Oink is an interior design, photo styling + set design studio run by Lea Korzeczek and Matthias Hiller and based in Germany. Their work is minimal yet inviting, playful yet functional, + modern yet simple. The use of white in the space, furniture or photograph is complimented by a warm element, such as a ceramics, flowers or well placed art piece. Simultaneously evoking cool and calm emotions with warm and open, I wouldn’t mind jumping into any of these photos and staying for a while.

Color My World 1.0

As a designer, I am constantly inspired by colors. Color can add emotion, and change the meaning of a design. I have decided to start a new weekly series: Color My World, to explore various color palettes and combinations. I love bright colors, and finding interesting or happy mixtures. Hope you enjoy!

Glamorous Air France Ads

The new Air France ad campaign combines beautiful imagery and stunning colors to produce glamorous advertisements that look more like retro Vogue photos than something for an airline. Created by the French agency BETC and photographed by Sofia + Mauro, these bold and beautiful ads are stunning and reminiscent of the golden travel years. I wouldn’t mind framing some of those for my walls.

Featuring: Meredith Carty

When I came across Meredith Carty‘s photography and design work, I knew she would be great to feature on the blog. Her style is happy, bright and clean with pops of color. I had her answer some questions about her passions, inspiration and background. Enjoy!

Meredith Carty
1. Where did you learn/train in design and photography?
I started taking photography classes back in high school and I had an amazing teacher! I went to college at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) in LA. I decided to study graphic design there because it would allow me to take my love of photography even further.

2. What made you decide to enter into a creative field?
Art has always been a huge part of my life…for me a daily essential is to create. Also, I always wanted to be a mom and I thought that a job in a creative field would allow me to create a little more flexibility with my schedule. It’s so important to me to be available for my kids.

3. Name one of the most creative projects you worked on and were proud of.
One of the most awesome projects that I got to work on was the Seafoam Edition of Project Life with Elise Cripe. I turned all of her sketches and ideas into digital files. Elise was a dream to work with and seeing the project so well received by such a large community was amazing! I walked away from the project with a wonderful new friend and it allowed me to chase some of my own dreams like my pop-up shop!

4. How would you describe your style and aesthetic?
I would describe my style as lifestyle/editorial. I love pops of bright color against white and quirky details. Bright, simple, clean, fresh. You can check out the pinterest board I created for my brand here.

5. What motivates you?
Time and experiences with my family and friends motivate me…they are really the most spectacular people. My heart always feels so full after time with them. Travel is high on the list for me this year and if my favorite people are included, even better! My word for 2014 is thrive, so I have big dreams :).

7. Where do you find inspiration?
My inspirational sources include some of the usual suspects: Pinterest, design mags, my favorite bloggers, Instagram. To get away from the computer, I’ll take a stroll through Target or Anthropology… and Gap Kids is a favorite! I’m learning that collaborating with other creative friends or a trip out of town is crazy inspiring for me. Santa Barbara with my loves is the best!

8. Are you a morning or night person?
I used to be a morning person…and maybe the perfect vanilla latte could convince me to be again – haha!  I’m going to try not to be such a night owl this year because of the kids and school schedules, but I can’t make any promises. Plus, a hot Sacramento night (poolside and after the sun has gone done) is one of my faves!
Big thanks to Meredith for her awesome photos. Be sure to check out her Instagram and website!
