Fall Flowers

LA Flower Mart
I love flowers, and have been hearing for quite some time how amazing the LA Flower Mart is. Last weekend, I had to check it out for myself, and it did not disappoint. So many gorgeous, interesting flowers everywhere, and at such reasonable prices. Note to self: Get there earlier next time! The mart is open from 6am–2pm (on weekends) and many vendors start to pack up around 12. I was on the hunt to find some fall flowers to make table center pieces for Friendsgiving. [Check it out here + here]

Font Friday 3.4

Here in LA, the weather has been just the right amount of fall. It is slightly overcast, scattered drizzles and a little colder than normal (aka, 63 degrees). Well, I am LOVING it. After growing up in Seattle, I was tired of 325 days of rain. I needed the sun. Now, after living in southern California for college and a little post-grad, I’m finding myself missing that fall feeling. Believe me, I don’t need excessive amounts of rain, but it is great to be able to wear my boots and scarves every once in a while. Either way, loving this weather, so excited for the weekend and T-5 days until I am home in Seattle!
Type and Rain Love
Signika is my choice font for the day. It is a great sans serif that comes in four weights (I like options!). It has pretty good kerning built into it, which is always a huge plus, and looks great in all caps, upper and lower or as a headline. Enjoy this versatile font and have a wonderful [fall feeling] weekend!

Friendsgiving

This past weekend, my three high school best friends and I got together with our significant others for a Friendsgiving. It was a blast, and certainly a tradition to keep up for years to come. I went all out, and had so much fun making all of the crafts and floral arrangements. We divided up the food so that one person wasn’t stuck making it all.
Thanksgiving Placesetting
Every place setting had a little boutineer I made from a painted stick, white and brown feathers, and a cut from a safflower plant. It was tied with a piece of red yarn. They came out so well, and were a big hit.

Food Labels
To label all of the food, I found pieces of bark at a park, painted them, and then wrote on them. They came super cute!

Floral Arrangement
I went to the Flower Mart on Saturday (more to come about that tomorrow!) and picked out several different types of flowers. I then played around with a little floral arrangements until I was satisfied with the results.
Painted Coaster
I think one of my favorite things that I made was the deer silhouette coasters. I painted old coasters dark blue, created the silhouette stencil of a deer and then spray painted it gold. To seal it, I painted mod podge on top and let it dry. They fit in so well with the rest of the table decor, and added a nice splash of blue,

Apple Pie
We had plenty of pie to go around, and I must say, they were delicious!
Friendsgiving was so much fun, and I will be eating left overs for days. It was a great way to celebrate friendship and the holiday season. And what’s even better, we still have the REAL Thanksgiving next week! Happy Tuesday!

October in Review

It is blowing my mind that October is over and we are fast approaching Thanksgiving!  While shopping this weekend, some stores were actually playing Christmas music! I’m like a giddy little girl this time of year! October was a great month and I can’t wait to see what November has in store.

Hello October!

September flew by and I cannot believe it is October. Last month was great, I spent some time in the Pacific Northwest, went to the Malibu triathlon (to cheer, not partake), spent time enjoying the last few weeks of “official” summer and did some serious blog planning. October marks the beginning of my favorite time of year, the HOLIDAY season. Halloween, Thanksgiving and then the winter festivities ending with New Years. 2014 will be here before we know it, but for now, enjoy one day at a time!

Santa Monica Sunset

I think sometimes I take living in Los Angeles, close to the beach, for granted. On Sunday night, one of my best friends and I decided to grab a cup of chai tea from Groundworks on Main Street in Santa Monica, and walk down to the beach to enjoy sunset. It was beautiful, and a great way to say goodbye to “summer” (although, I have yet to see any indication of fall). I love sunset, and all the beauty it has to offer.

Starbucks: Pink

Despite the fact that Starbucks released their pink sleeves advertising their new partnership with a bakery from San Francisco a few weeks ago, I am a recent big fan. I love the scalloped boarder, the typeface, and the interesting color. I know not everyone is a fan, but it is definitely nice to see a temporary color that draws more attention to it. Being from Seattle, I’m a Starbucks lover, and from a designer standpoint, really like and am enjoying this playful change. [One side note: it does look like Starbucks is advertising breast cancer awareness since this similar shade of pink has come to represent that].

Succulents: Part 1

Alternative Apparel + succulents
I discovered succulents when I moved to LA and fell in love. Not only are they easy to take care of [I have a hard time keeping any other type of plant alive], they are also so pretty and interesting to look at. Succulents seem to be a staple in a majority of LA gardens, potted plants, or interior decorations. I headed over to Alternative Apparel in Venice, and met up with Allyson, their Social Media Manager. She gave me a tour of the shop, and all of the succulent arrangements throughout the store + store front. They have some pretty cool set ups, so if you are ever on Abbot Kinney, be sure and stop by to check it out! [They also have the most comfy clothes!]

What makes so many of these succulent arrangements unique is the interesting containers they are kept in. I know next time I go to the Pasadena Flea Market, I’ll for sure be looking for things like this!

Once again, a big thanks to Allyson. Check out Alternative Apparel Venice’s Instagram for awesome pictures from around the shop!

Pasadena Flea Market

On the second Sunday of every month, the Rose Bowl becomes the biggest treasure hunt/yard sale/antique shop I have ever seen. There is everything from furniture, to denim cut offs + you can find some really interesting items. The more serious shoppers get there around 6 am to score the best items. I got there around 11, just to browse. A tip if you attend next month: it gets HOT HOT HOT. Bring water, sunscreen and dress appropriately.

A lot of vendors have miscellaneous items spread out for you to search through, as seen above. However, I found two different booths that had more of a concentration, and were laid out so well.

FR2S Colored Bottles
The couple who was selling all of this colored glass, did so in a way you couldn’t help but walk over to. The glass was organized and neat, and it was pretty cool to see the vintage colored bottles. Next time I need a vase, I know where I’m going!

I think this was possibly the most interesting table I saw on Sunday. This man had acquired trinkets, all with a steampunk vibe, and organized them in a way for you to search through. I loved his wooden stamps and buckets of loose letters. I am definitely brainstorming some craft ideas.

Happy Wednesday!

4th of July Designs

I had a great 4th of July weekend, going to the beach, and celebrating with friends. We decided last minute to throw a little get together after I found some adorable plates and napkins at Target. I designed some little print outs + made some confetti to make our place look festive.

I decided to use more muted red + blue for the printouts so that it would all look cohesive with the bought plates and straws.

I love these paper straws, and decided to add cute little sayings on each of them.

Last, but not least, I designed a patriotic-themed menu for our guests including drinks and appetizers we had:
