10 Things: Now Trending

Trends are a funny thing. They come in waves, and just as quickly as something becomes popular, it can become passé. Looking on Instagram, Pinterest + blogs, it is interesting to see what objects, colors + designs keep showing up across all mediums. After thinking about what items I keep repeatedly seeing, I complied a list of the top 10 things I see as “trending” right now. Whether its a giant balloon letters, palm leaves or flamingos, these colors/objects are having their moment in the design + blog eye.

Bright + Sunny Stock Photos

Hello! After a month long blogging brain break (and a crazy amount of new clients and design work!) I’m back with a post I’ve been thinking about for a while. I love finding stock images that don’t look like stock images. Well curated, highly stylized and excellently designed photos are all things that catch my eye + separate the “wow” photos from the pack. I went through one of my favorite sites, Stocksy, and gathered a round up of some bright + sunny images that I love + can’t believe are stock images. (For all the people stuck in cold climates, hopefully these pics hold you until summer!)

Pop Alt Mini Party + DIY

Special thanks to Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores®  for sponsoring this party.
Happy February to all! I got back last week from another incredible Alt Summit. Not only did I get to speak on Photoshop for bloggers, I was also fortunate enough to throw one of the Mini Parties Friday night with three of my good friends: Audrey of French Knot Studios, Izzy of Izzy Hudgins Photography + Troy of Simply Troy Lifestyle + Events (friends I made at Alt last January, + I couldn’t imagine my life without them now!)
The theme of our Mini Party was Pop Alt. Inspired by Andy Warhol, bright colors + the pop art movement, we transformed the room into a color blocked wonderland. The walls were adorned with over 900 feet of hand sewed black and white drapes (created by Ms. French Knot Studios herself) + giant Andy Warhol quotes (designed by yours truly), the tables covered with stunning sequin table cloths (thanks Troy + La Tavola!) + a gorgeous geo curtain backdrop for selfies. As take aways/swag, I designed four postcards printed by Tiny Prints, each with a different Warhol quote. Izzy was there to photograph + capture the evening, and created an awesome 80’s pop music playlist. For the center pieces, we created a floral meets comic art masterpiece. Check out the DIY below so you can make your own awesome center pieces. Bonus! The icons I designed are also available as a free download!

• Scissors
• Glitter
• Glue pen
• Salad plate
• 50-60 white carnations like these from FiftyFlowers.com

3. Spray paint the bamboo skewers in a variety of bright colors.
4. Draw on the elements with the glue pen where you want to accent with glitter. The glue pen dries pretty quickly, so work in sections.

5. Sprinkle with glitter.

6. Peel off the backing paper of the glitter paper, attach the bamboo skewer, then carefully line up the printed piece on top.  Press together firmly to adhere.

7. Repeat steps 2-6 for each element.
8. Place floral foam long sides side by side on a salad plate and trim off the corners so they’ll fit.  Then soak in water.
9. After foam soaks, place on salad plate.  Cut stems of carnations so they are about 2″ long.
10. Gently push each carnation into the foam making sure to hide all the green foam.
11. After they are filled to your liking, add your fun Pop Art elements.  Vary their height for added interest. Pop Alt Party

Color My World: New York Edition

You may remember that I teamed up with my friend Christy of Avoiding Atrophy in January to post Colors of Winter. With all the beautiful changing colors, we decided to showcase fall colors in New York. Since Los Angeles is seasonally challenged (believe me, I love the warm weather, but do miss the occasional rain!), Christy took some beautiful photos of New York/Brooklyn showing all fall in all it’s glory. Enjoy!
