Pop Alt Mini Party + DIY

Special thanks to Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores®  for sponsoring this party.
Happy February to all! I got back last week from another incredible Alt Summit. Not only did I get to speak on Photoshop for bloggers, I was also fortunate enough to throw one of the Mini Parties Friday night with three of my good friends: Audrey of French Knot Studios, Izzy of Izzy Hudgins Photography + Troy of Simply Troy Lifestyle + Events (friends I made at Alt last January, + I couldn’t imagine my life without them now!)
The theme of our Mini Party was Pop Alt. Inspired by Andy Warhol, bright colors + the pop art movement, we transformed the room into a color blocked wonderland. The walls were adorned with over 900 feet of hand sewed black and white drapes (created by Ms. French Knot Studios herself) + giant Andy Warhol quotes (designed by yours truly), the tables covered with stunning sequin table cloths (thanks Troy + La Tavola!) + a gorgeous geo curtain backdrop for selfies. As take aways/swag, I designed four postcards printed by Tiny Prints, each with a different Warhol quote. Izzy was there to photograph + capture the evening, and created an awesome 80’s pop music playlist. For the center pieces, we created a floral meets comic art masterpiece. Check out the DIY below so you can make your own awesome center pieces. Bonus! The icons I designed are also available as a free download!
Pop Alt Party
Supplies:
• 2 rectangles of wet floral foam
• Bamboo skewers
• Spray paint in assorted colors
• These downloadable images (if you choose!)
• Card stock
• Printer
• Adhesive backed glitter paper
• Scissors
• Glitter
• Glue pen
• Salad plate
• 50-60 white carnations like these from FiftyFlowers.com
• Plate to hold the floral foam
Directions:
1. Print elements on card stock.
2. Cut out the shapes from the cardstock, and matching shapes from the adhesive backed glitter paper.
Pop Alt Party
3. Spray paint the bamboo skewers in a variety of bright colors.
4. Draw on the elements with the glue pen where you want to accent with glitter. The glue pen dries pretty quickly, so work in sections.
Pop Alt Party
5. Sprinkle with glitter.
Pop Alt Party
6. Peel off the backing paper of the glitter paper, attach the bamboo skewer, then carefully line up the printed piece on top.  Press together firmly to adhere.
Pop Alt Party
7. Repeat steps 2-6 for each element.
8. Place floral foam long sides side by side on a salad plate and trim off the corners so they’ll fit.  Then soak in water.
9. After foam soaks, place on salad plate.  Cut stems of carnations so they are about 2″ long.
10. Gently push each carnation into the foam making sure to hide all the green foam.
11. After they are filled to your liking, add your fun Pop Art elements.  Vary their height for added interest. Pop Alt Party

Current Work/Mood Boards

I’ve been pretty busy with some freelance work lately so thought I would share a mood board for one of my projects. I gave the client three different directions for them to choose from which would then dictate the look and feel for the new site. Which is your favorite?

#2: Floral Fun

Iced Lolly Branding

I recently came across this branding exercise on Behance by London designer Rachel Brooks and totally loved her illustration style used. I love clean, simple and colorful, and her illustrations for Freeze Gourmet Iced Lollies were exactly that. With summer on our heels, a well done iced lolly (popsicles) design is the perfect way to get us ready! Now, who wants a lolly!

Glamorous Air France Ads

The new Air France ad campaign combines beautiful imagery and stunning colors to produce glamorous advertisements that look more like retro Vogue photos than something for an airline. Created by the French agency BETC and photographed by Sofia + Mauro, these bold and beautiful ads are stunning and reminiscent of the golden travel years. I wouldn’t mind framing some of those for my walls.

Happy Birthday, Audrey

Audrey Hepburn Google Doodle
Audrey Hepburn is one of my favorite actresses of all time. I love her movies, and the person that she was. In honor of what would have been her 85th birthday, Google designed an awesome Google Doodle. I think it perfectly captures this wonderful lady.

Minted + Mother’s Day

Minted_EMC
When I attended Alt Summit in January, I had the pleasure of getting to know the folks at Minted + the awesome charity they have partnered with, Every Mother Counts (EMC). EMC, created by Christy Turlington Burns, aims to support and educate the world on maternal mortality reduction, and help improve the lives of women and girls globally.

From now until April 28, Minted is donating 20% of all Art Prints purchased to EMC. You best believe I ordered my Mom one of these awesome prints for Mother’s Day. Something cute and does good, HELLO! (I’d show you which one, but my mom is an avid reader of From Rain to Shine + I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise!)
Minted Art Prints
Minted has such a wide selection + variety of prints, there is something for every mom! Who knows, you may even find something for yourself! Can you say new gallery wall piece!

As a special extra somethin’, when you use the code RAINSHINEEMC at checkout, you get a special downloadable card to include with your gift that explains what this donation goes to.

Mast Brothers Chocolate

One of my favorite places I went to while in Brooklyn was the Mast Brothers Chocolate factory + store. Christy, who is totally hilarious and my East Coast soul sister, joined me for brunch and then a walk through the fabulous chocolate factory.

My favorite part of Mast Brothers Chocolate is their awesome packaging and wapping. I wish their paper was sold as gift wrap, it is so wonderful! Mast Bros has one employee who is responsible for all of their paper+pattern design as well as their graphic design. Talk about a dream job. How much fun would that be! Sign me up to be that apprentice, because seriously, what is better than excellent design and delicious chocolate! If you are ever in the Brooklyn area, definitely check out their store!

Design Find

Do you ever come across a design/designer and think “Holy cow, I LOVE their work.” Well, that happened to me last week. I was on Pinterest and came across a really cool state map. I did some digging and found the original source came from this awesome set of designers, These Are Things. Check out their work below, and hop over to their site to see even more.
