Traditions + Resolutions

New Year's Tradition
Everyone has a quirky tradition of some sorts, right? My tradition is related to new years day.

Here’s the backstory: It was new year’s day 2012 (my first year in LA), and my roommate and I were unloading her car. We had forgotten about the full champagne bottle that was stowed in her trunk. Now, her trunk was a hatchback, and as you know, bottles roll. Well, we opened the trunk, and out rolled the champagne bottle that proceeded to shatter all over our parking garage.  We both kind of stood there for a minute, staring at the bottle and each other, thinking, “Well, shoot, this isn’t the best start to the new year!” We cleaned up the bottle and went upstairs (and probably back to bed).

Several weeks later, we both realized that really awesome things kept happening to us. Now, I’m not a suspicious person, but we both independently attributed our strokes of good luck to the breaking of the champagne bottle. Ever since then, it has been our tradition to break a bottle on new year’s day for good luck. Although her and I no longer live together, this year we FaceTimed while we watched the other smash the bottle. (We have a whole set up now…bottle goes into plastic bag, which then goes into a brown, paper bag and we smash with a hammer to make sure we don’t hurt ourselves or get glass everywhere).

So there you have it. Third year in a row that we have upheld this tradition, and every year, it reminds us that though things may seem to not be going the way you would like, take it in stride, and good things will come.
Now, on to my new year’s resolutions. This year, I decided to stray away from making specific resolutions (ex: do more yoga, or sketch more.) I have found that my success rate tends to be lower and ultimately leads to me feeling a little down come February when I realize nothing is different. I opted for vague and general resolutions this year.  This means I can practice all said resolutions in more aspects of my life. Take a look below:
New Years Resolutions 2014
All of my resolutions follow a common thread of positivity and optimism: for myself, my well-being and for those around me. None are specific, but instead, can translate to every aspect of my life. We all have ruts and times we are down, but I think by upholding my new year’s resolutions, it will help me focus on the good, and how wonderful life really is.

I hope you all are having a great 2014. Do you have any fun New Year’s Eve/Day traditions, or any resolutions? Share them with me!

Findings on FFFFound #2

This is my second post on my “Findings on FFFFound,” a goldmine of inspiring, different, and just plain odd images. Enjoy!

Feeling Fall Mood Board

In design school, I didn’t fully understand the value of mood boards. Now that I am out in the “real world” and working as a designer + freelancer, I can’t get enough. They are a great way to convey a feeling, a design direction or a mood. Fall has gotten me feeling inspired in many ways, so I decided what better way to visualize my inspiration than a mood board! Enjoy.

Happy Fall

Hello Fall
Yesterday marked the first day of fall, which also is the beginning of the holiday season [and my favorite time of year]. First Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas/Hanukkah and then, BAM, 2014. Although LA doesn’t have much of a change to the weather or colors, I have great memories of fall in Seattle. I did a little browsing on tumblr/pinterest/flickr for some pretty fall images and the gorgeous colors that come with it.

According to Pantone

Happy Monday! For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been working on a new project that I am super excited about. I have been carrying around a Pantone swatch book and matching it to the colors that I find in my day to day adventures. You might have heard of The Pantone Project, where people upload photos of different Pantone swatch postcards [just one color]. Definitely check out #thepantoneproject on Instagram. My project is similar to that, however, instead of using one color, I use the entire  swatch, with all of the shades. Many of the things I have found have a range of colors that seem to match, There is so much color and inspiration in everything around us if we just stop to look at it. Check out my Instagram [@fromraintoshine] to see the most current photos. I will post a recap weekly!

Pantone Matching
I’ve really had fun with this project so far, and I can’t wait to see where it goes! It was really exciting on Friday when I found out that Pantone had shared one of my photos on their official Instagram. Talk about a graphic designer’s dream!

Succulents: Part 1

Alternative Apparel + succulents
I discovered succulents when I moved to LA and fell in love. Not only are they easy to take care of [I have a hard time keeping any other type of plant alive], they are also so pretty and interesting to look at. Succulents seem to be a staple in a majority of LA gardens, potted plants, or interior decorations. I headed over to Alternative Apparel in Venice, and met up with Allyson, their Social Media Manager. She gave me a tour of the shop, and all of the succulent arrangements throughout the store + store front. They have some pretty cool set ups, so if you are ever on Abbot Kinney, be sure and stop by to check it out! [They also have the most comfy clothes!]

What makes so many of these succulent arrangements unique is the interesting containers they are kept in. I know next time I go to the Pasadena Flea Market, I’ll for sure be looking for things like this!

So many different variations, each are so interesting!
